Deputy Fires Gun To Scare Off Dogs That Attacked Man

5/16/2005

An Orange County man got quite a scare when a Doberman and a German shepherd attacked him early Tuesday morning. The attack prompted an Orange County deputy to fire his gun in a neighborhood off Deerfield Boulevard.

The dogs have been described as vicious and dangerous.

"I happened to look out the window and saw two dogs chasing an older man down the street," said witness Shane Boyer.

That frightened man was taking his morning walk when the two dogs hunted him down. Olive Petty said she woke up hearing someone screaming for help.

"He would turn around ever so often to shoo them off. But he kept running," Petty said.

The dogs eventually caught up with him. They bit him in the arm, leg and hand. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment for minor wounds.

An animal services enforcement officer removed the dogs from the street, but not before an Orange County sheriff's deputy had to discharge his weapon to prevent the dogs from attacking a little kid.

The owner says her dogs got away when they jumped over a fence. She had been looking for them since late Monday night. She didn't comment on why her dogs reacted so aggressively.

"When you got two dogs in a situation like that, all it takes is one to show some aggression; the other one is just following along," explained animal services enforcement officer Charles Griffin.

For the next 10 days, the canines will stay put in the pound, far away from people who live in the neighborhood. After the 10-day quarantine period, animal services will determine if the dogs should be returned to their owner or if they should be put to sleep.
