Dog Survives 200-Foot Cliff Plunge

5/16/2005

A four-year-old Doberman dog was rescued alive after jumping off a 200-feet-high cliff in hot pursuit of a rabbit.

The pet – named Gemma – broke two legs and suffered deep cuts and internal injuries but still managed to swim to shore.

A lifeboat crew spotted the injured animal and took it to a local vet who said the pet would make a full recovery.

The drama in Newhaven, East Sussex, unfolded shortly after midday today when Gemma’s owners watched in horror as the dog plunged over the cliff-top into the sea.

Coastguards from the town scoured the shoreline and located the dog, which was taken to the lifeboat station.

A Solent Coastguard spokesman said: “The dog has suffered some pretty serious injuries but appears to have had a lucky escape. The vet was optimistic that it would be okay.”
